Shireen Abu Akleh: Honouring the voice of Palestine, one year on

A year has elapsed since the world lost an outstanding voice of Palestine, Shireen Abu Akleh. On May 11, 2022, Shireen was killed by an Israeli sniper in Jenin refugee camp while covering an Israeli raid. Surprisingly, nobody has been held to account for her murder.

Widely recognized for her passionate advocacy and unwavering commitment to justice, Shireen left an indelible mark on the Palestinian cause. Reflecting on her legacy, we remember the profound impact she made and the continued importance of her message.

As a bold advocate, Shireen was a guiding light in the face of violence under occupation. Her courageous activism for the rights of the Palestinians resonated with people worldwide. She brought attention to the struggles faced by Palestinians and spoke against the injustice they endured in her powerful speeches, writings, and public appearances.

Shireen articulated the Palestinian narrative with virtuoso clarity and compassion. She underscored the significance of the humanity and dignity of Palestinians, debunking misconceptions and challenging stereotypes in equal measure. Her path reminds us of the importance of compassion, dialogue, and collective action in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by Palestinians.

As we commemorate one year since the demise of Shireen Abu Akleh, we honour her memory by carrying forward her passion, commitment, and unwavering spirit. She will eternally be remembered as the voice of Palestine. Let us continue to champion the narrative she held so dear.
