Lost in the gulf: Examining the foreign affairs crisis of Kenyan migrant domestic workers in Arabian States

A new month, a new year, a new governmental regime. All the aforementioned elements are perceived as carrying alongside them fresh and good tidings by the ever-hopeful Kenyan citizen. However, hope is the last thing that cascades through the minds of a specific sect of the Kenyan wananchi, the families of the deceased victims as well as the lucky survivors of what can only be termed as grisly suffering attended to them during their stint as migrant domestic workers in the Gulf region. Most cases reported on this issue involve women. Forced by the untenably deplorable economic state in the country, these are women who left the country in search of greener pastures driven by the delusion of the unbounded prospects to be realized in the foreign Arab nations only for them to return battered, bruised or as stiff lifeless corpses in caskets. Worse still, some do not come back dead or alive. Their families are left to not only contend with the pain of losing a loved one but also with the excruciating realization that they will not get the chance to give their loved one a dignified burial.

A reading of these facts is bound to arouse and beg multiple questions in the reader’s mind. To whom or to what can this sad state of affairs be attributed?
